Also, the shifting economy has resulted in a growing number of latch-key children. Often these children are responsible for providing snacks and dinner for themselves and their younger siblings. Compounding the problems associated with latch key children, parents’ perceptions of safe neighborhoods also contribute to increases in childhood obesity. Education is not only for the purpose of supporting growth and development, but for advancing societies (Whitehead, 2011). School violence affects parents’ perceptions about when, where and how their child should learn.
